The .40 S&W cartridge was developed in 1990 by Smith & Wesson and Winchester as a law enforcement round to provide a balance between the firepower of 9mm and the stopping power of .45 ACP. It was created in response to the FBI's need for a more effective cartridge after the 1986 Miami shootout, leading to its rapid adoption by police agencies across the United States.
